It all began in 1982, when two brothers opened their first school in Brunswick, Maryland. This was the first school that Se Yong Chang and Se Won Chang operated together in the United States. Yong's Taekwondo Institute was a very small school which resulted in strong bonds between the students and the instructors. After 7 years the Chang brothers decided to move out and open a new and bigger school in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1989 the U.S. Taekwondo Academy was born. Soon the efficient and effective teaching style of the U.S. Taekwondo Academy began to spread throughout Maryland. As a result the U.S. Taekwondo Academy became a highly respected and admired martial arts school; giving birth to over 1,000 WTF certified blackbelts, instructors, masters, and superb Taekwondo athletes. In 1987, Master Se Won Chang's first child was born. Because the commute from Virginia to Maryland was a hastle, Master Chang wanted to pursue another career that would allow him to be closer to his family. Several years passed and Master Se Won Chang felt like it was time to get back to what he truly wanted to do, which was to teach martial arts. So in the year 2000, the U.S. Taekwondo Academy emerged in Fairfax, Virginia. Starting off small, the U.S.T.A. began to grow. In 2005, the U.S. Taekwondo Academy has expanded to its current size of over 6,000 sq. ft. of matt space, game room, and after school study room with 4 high-speed internet computers and school/project supplies.
